September 22 – Background: one hundred years before Vatican II, John Henry Cardinal Newman, often called the “Father” of the Second Vatican Council, was teaching the ideas that would come to fruition at the Council. We examine how the whole Church is challenged to live out the roles of priest, prophet and king in our era.
September 29 – Tonight we look at the sensus fidelium (“sense of the faithful”) and how truths are uncovered and taught. In this process the role of the laity is indispensable.
October 6 – The Church Human and Divine: the Church is both a divine and human institution, but we have often stressed divinity at expense to humanity. A divine and human Church has much to learn from human experience and such disciplines as sociology, the sciences and political theory.
October 20 - The Church Before and After Vatican II: Before the Council the Church had two missions – that of sanctification performed by the clergy and a social mission performed by laypeople. In the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium) both these missions are placed on equal ground. This has had a profound impact on how we view the Church today.
October 27 - The Sacrament of Everyday Life: the Holy Spirit runs through the secular as well as the sacred spheres of life. Tonight, we share a vision of the Church where all the baptized participate as full and equal partners.
